‘Thums Up Palat Vaar' and the return of the counter-punch commercial

Palat Vaar — the counter-punch — is a phrase every Indian cricket fan understands. Thums Up built a whole campaign around it. Not the moment you win, but the moment before it, when everything says you shouldn't.

The films are shot like sports docs. Slow motion. Dust. Sweat. No CGI. No celebrity discount. The music is a heartbeat. The tagline is one word — a Hindi verb that means to flip the table.

It works because it doesn't try to steal from the moment. It gives the moment back to the audience, and stands next to it as a witness.

Producer’s Take

What we’d tell you.

The strongest brand films don't put the brand at the centre. They put the customer's most cinematic moment at the centre, and stand a respectful step behind it.

Before you brief your next film, write the answer to one question: what is the two-second frame my audience is already dreaming of? Build the film around delivering that frame. Everything else, including the logo, is furniture.
